Hi Randy,

Thanks for giving me a better idea of what a porfolio is. I'm still a little scared about creating my first one, but I know that it's all a learning process. I'm still unsure of what I'll be doing in the future and how my porfolio will actually be instrumental in what I end up doing. However, after reading your post, I'm convinced that it will be something that will help others get a better sense of who I am as a person. Furthermore, I'm sure that I can learn from this portfolio creating experience, and translate it to my other fields of interest as well.

I created a teaching portfoliio as a part of the graduation requirements for my B.S. in Ed. We asked returning alumni searching for jobs how important their portfolio turned out to be. While it was often a great tool for them to keep track of their work and archive their best material, they often responded that the schools didn't even look at their work. Maybe at present it is just a culture gap with the technology, but hopefully the work we put into these portfolios will pay off when it comes time to market ourselves.

It has taken me a while to come to terms not only with the concept of what a portfolio actually is, but also with what I think about mie and to know that I fully understand the concept. Now being half way through my portfolio, my understanding of everything we have discussed in class and random thoughts I have had throughout the semester.
reading Randy's posting, it has also made me think of my own experiences in which this portfolio could have helped me and others. I have worked in an arts admin position, and I learnt alot about the business and music education. to at some point add this knowledge to my portfolio would help me in the future applying for jobs. In the format of a portfolio, the skills I learnt can be discussed as not just how to use office programs, but how to interact with students and teachers to get the best results and the most respect.

I do think that the portfolio is a very useful tool, not only to reallyt reflect on the learning from the intro to mie class, but how I think education should be, think about my own experiences and how I cann touch people's lives in the way mine has been through music.

I definitely thought that creating a portfolio was going to be a "daunting task," but as we near the end of the semester of the Intro to MIE course I now realize how useful of a tool it's going to be in the future. I know that some of us say that we are never going to teach so why even make this portfolio? I think this portfolio can also be quite a helpful tool for musicians who plan on performing for the rest of their lives. What I've noticed in the past couple of months since I've taken my very first auditions is that other category on the application that says, "outreach experience." I know right now that my outreach experience isn't extensive, but at least I can show a committee that I have a launching point. With this portfolio they can see that I have enough basic knowledge about teaching strategies to go into the community and teach a lesson to children or adults.
